Help & user guide
The Jobsmith runs on one loop: build your Career Profile → search live jobs → check your fit → forge a tailored résumé. This page walks each step and links straight to where you do it. Stuck on something not covered here? Email us.
Quick links
Step 1 — Build your Career Profile
Upload a résumé on the Résumés page and we parse it into your Career Profile — your job titles, skills, education, and certifications. This profile is the single source your searches, fit analysis, and forges draw on.
Every item is editable: fix a parsed title, add a skill you have, or delete anything that doesn't belong. Your edits always win — re-parsing a résumé never overwrites something you've confirmed. Job titles are tidied automatically, so a bullet like “started as legal assistant” is stored as Legal Assistant.
Step 2 — Search jobs
On the search page, enter a Role focus (words that must appear in the job title) and optional keywords. “Search from Career Profile” pre-fills these from your profile. Results come from employers' live hiring systems plus broader aggregator boards, each stamped:
- ✓ Verified — read live from the company's own ATS hiring system.
- ⚠ Unverified — from an aggregator board we can't read live; confirm before applying.
Filters worth knowing
- Include broader aggregator listings. A per-search filter — leave it on for the widest results, or uncheck it to search verified-live jobs only.
- Work mode. Pick Remote, Hybrid, or On-site and matching jobs float to the top. Postings that don't state a mode still appear below (they may match) — tick “Hide jobs that don't state a work mode” to drop those.
- Advanced filters. Salary floor, location, employment type, career level, posted-within, and exclusions for titles, companies, or phrases.
- Save this search to re-run it later from Load saved search.
How salary is shown
We only ever show pay a posting actually states — we never invent or estimate a figure and present it as the employer's. When a posting lists no pay, we show the real U.S. national wage range the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes for that occupation, clearly marked as market context, not the employer's pay. Where a source attaches its own machine-predicted salary, we drop it rather than pass a guess off as listed pay.
Step 3 — Check your fit
On any posting, run Fit analysis. It compares the role against your Career Profile and shows your strengths and the gaps. See a skill or certification you actually have that's missing? Check it and one click adds it to your profile, so your next search and forge know about it.
Step 4 — Forge a tailored résumé
Hit Forge on a posting and The Jobsmith writes a résumé tailored to it — plus a cover letter and a short recruiter message. It writes from what's already in your own experience, and an automated audit keeps every line true to it — so you can talk about anything on the page with confidence. Download as .docx or .pdf when you're ready to apply.
Applying for an internal or unposted role, or a posting you found elsewhere? Use the Paste a job page to paste its description, check your fit, and forge directly. What you paste stays on that page until you clear it.
